Dorothy Vavra, 81, of Katy, Texas, passed peacefully on Sunday, June 9, 2024. She had been admitted to the hospital Wednesday due to complications from Chemotherapy for Lung Cancer.

A public visitation for family and friends was held on Monday, June 17, 2024 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the chapel at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell. Funeral services were held at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, also at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home, followed by interment at Schoppe Family Cemetery.

Dorothy was the proprietor of Dorothy’s Quick Stop in Lyons, Texas, in the late 80s and early 90s. She loved her business and had great rapport with all of her customers.

Prior to owning the grocery store/ restaurant, she did in-home childcare for many years.

After she sold the store and moved to College Station, she once again did in-home childcare. She loved taking care of babies and small children.

Dorothy was lovingly called maw-maw by many and was a mom to just about any child or teen she came in contact with. All of her children’s friends loved her, as did everyone who came to know her.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Minnie and Walter Schoppe; and three brothers, Robert, Gene and Norman Schoppe.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her beloved husband, Raymond Vavra; two daughters, Frances Reynolds and Elizabeth Young; two sons-in-law, Morris Reynolds and Kenneth Young; two grandchildren, Shelby Becker and Dante Saenz. She also leaves behind four brothers, Jimmy, Roger, Larry and JC Schoppe; and one sister, Shirley Schudalla. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Her kind, gentle and nurturing spirit will be greatly missed.
